I have to agree with boats.

I'm sure there are other fine makes out there. That said I have found MVA's to be among the best with superb customer service.

Dave:

For the front sight I would opt for the O'Hare Tool sight made by Jim Kluskens. It is similar to the Baldwin sight with a spirit level inside the globe. Besides the standard inserts Jim will make custom inserts of any configuration you may desire.

For the rear I would go with an MVA if looks were most important. They are the most graceful. For function, the Parts Unknown "Borchardt " style sight gets the nod. Both are Soule sights but the PU has a superior elevation adjustment.  It is the only such sight that enables one to make precise vertical adjustment in fractions of a minute.

If by irons you are under ASSRA rules I'd chose a Unertl, or other tube sight for the rear and a Freeman front or Redfield Olympic etc.

If a tang mounted sight, I'd go with MVA. Front MVA or Axtel.

I don't shoot irons.  my eyes are not good enough any more, but I like my ss rifles to have them. they look incomplete without them.  I have had several sets.  my Browning has a set of C. Sharps front and rear.  the low wall that got stolen a few years back had a set of Axtells that I really liked.  I personally do not care much for the Soule type, might be different if I used them and if I shot BCPR and Creedmoor distances.  I'll probably be going with Axtell sights in the future, and maybe a Pope sight from PU for my schuetzen wall.
Anybody have any idea what base will give the right angle and fit best on a Ruger #1/3 tang?  I've got two of'em to figure out sights for.

The Baldwin sight is the only rear sight I would buy because its movement is correct [clockwise down or left] counterclockwise up or right] I don't know of any other tang sight that works correctly.
The Kermit Hoke  [York Pa] rear sight has very good craftsmanship and the most readable staff because of larger numbers-- it is also graduated in 1/2 MOA.  I like the old Redfield front sights, I'm not sure the Schuetzen shooters need these expensive bubble front sights but long range rifles probably do need them.
The Unertl Tube rear sight is very good but not legal in a lot of singleshot rifle matches because of the Click adjustment--the guy who made this rule needs to explain to me how a Click adjustment sight is more precise making it not legal.  ASSRA has it right "shoot what you brung"       leadball

I would opt for an MVA Schuetzen vernier and a Lyman 17 as modified with a level by Shaver and inserts plus a thinning of the knurled locking ring.I would NOT use a Hadley eyecup for a target rifle - well I might, but it would not be very high priority.

I use both Zika front and rear sights on several rifles. They are second to none but are not eazy to get.

Actually, for ranges out to only 100-200 yds, I've had splendid results from an original Lyman Range Control rear tang sight with the #47 windage stem installed. The click elevation on my particular sight is tight, and the #47 stem is much tighter than any of my Lyman 103s, even the brand new NOS one.

I like the shorter rear sight height, it's much more pleasing than any of those taller BPCR sights. My PU Borchardt sight is great out to 1000 yds but all you personally need is 200, and so IMO the Unertl-type tube sight is the most accurate way to go for the short ranges. I find that those taller rear tang sight staffs are a real PITA when handling the rifle, and of course are competely unnecessary for 200 yds.
Good luck, Joe

This is probably heresy, but the Anschutz rear sight on a scope block with a Gehman eyepiece works really well.  Anschutz front with inserts.

I answered MVA quick and I do believe they are making not only a good sight but the full range of front & rear heights and disk you need to set up a traditional style rifle. Workmanship is the best too.

My first CPA has a real nice set of Mike Stevens sights. but with his passing they are no more.  I was real pleased to find MVA who filled the void well when setting up a 2nd Schuetzen.

I don't know what I would use if building a modern Schuetzen. On my other non-single shot rifles I have a mixed bag of Lymans Redfields Anschutz and Walther on an Air Rifle. I like some things about all of them but none are perfect. Perhaps the Lyman 48's are the best. The Germans have the screws backwards so adjustments are not simple.

I suspect I would use one of the modern high power match rifle sight systems with an adjustable height front sight. One of the things about Schuetzen is you cannot have a adjustable cheek piece. Shooting Iron and Scope you need a fairly high sight line to maintain the same head positon when switching from Iron to Scope matches.

This is easy to obtain with any of the modern iron sights. They are well furnished with levels, Front disk in all sizes, adjustable iris, and filters too.
