the best black powder lube
May 18th, 2008 at 8:39am

OK guys, I am starting to really get into black powder reloading for the 45-70 and would like you opinion as to which is the best black powder lube that I can use or make. I would rather make my own lube for my bullets so any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am really starting to love this stuff, the smoke , the nostalgia , the originality of it all is really quite wonderful. Smiley Smiley

kaotic01,

Probably the best lube to use for BP is SPG. I've used it and a myriad of other home made and commercial lubes and always return to SPG. You can pan lube with it or run it thru a lubri-sizer.

If you want to make your own lube just be sure to use only 'natural" ingredients.

And welcome to the wonderful world of BP! But be forewarned. If you don't get a regular fix of BP smoke you'll start getting withdrawal symptoms.  Smiley

SPG (Steve Garbe), Black Magic (Sidra Bagwell) and White Lightning (Dan Theodore) are generally considered to be the best. IMO you can't go wrong with any of these.
Good luck, Joe

The commercial lubes mentioned will all do the job.  I would stick with SPG or Black Magic, although others may be as good.

Since you mentioned wanting to cook up your own, here is a source of several receipes.  You make have to click on the LUBES link at the left.

http://www.bpcr.net/index-a.htm

(Sorry, forgot to paste the link the first time)

I have used the beeswax/lanolin/Lubegard mix with decent results.

morning gents,
while spg and all these other lubes work I am a cheapskate and like to make my own. got this recipe from an old friend and it works for me

beeswax    8 oz.
crisco        6 oz.
anhydrous lanolin   2 heaping tablespoons
10 drops oil of wintergreen
if this is too hard add more crisco to soften.
in over 15 years of usuing this in 100 to 50 degree temps I have NEVER had a problem with fowling and it will last about 1 year and then it is time for the trash.
cheers

Here's a link to more lubes then one could make and test over many years ...
http://www.theopenrange.net/forum/index.php?topic=450.0
includes one that is supposed to be 'the SPG look-a-like' Wink and many that were used in the 1800's

I just spent the weekend in Yuma Az practicing on silohuetts with my partner. We both were shooting 45-70 with Swiss 1.5. The temp was 75 at 0700 and we shot until 0930 when it was 95. We both fired 50 shots and had no fouling or leading problems. We both used Doug Knoell lube, available from Buffalo Arms. Use of the blow tube is mandatory and kept the fouling soft.

Roger,

That was indeed a tough test for a lube.

Did you fire all 50 shots without cleaning, or did you clean between strings?

Paul, No cleaning until all 50 shots were down range. Some very small sparkles of lead, but nothing ought of the ordinary for this gun. Cleaned up with 4 patches and windex with vineger. Doug developed this lube for our hot dry conditions in So Cal and it also works fine in what passes for winter out here (40 degrees is my personal low temp to shoot in). Shooting a Paul Jones 540gr, pan lubed and unsized.

roger,
used to live in yuma. and I do not feel sorry for any one who would want to shoot there. but it is a hell of a place to test a lube. were you out at the adair range? lived there from 1974-76. then moved to san diego.
I tried a lot of different lubes including spg. and finally settled on my mix about. the hottest I ever shot it was 103 and the coolest was about 45.
and have never had a problem with it.
what i did  learn even with spg lube it will go bad after a length of time. if you only shoot once a month one pound of lube is good for a year then use it to flux the pot.
the last batch of spg that i used I found to be too soft for pan lubing.
cheers

Irishm, My shooting partner lives in Wellton and we wanted to shoot in those conditions in anticipation of going to Raton this year. People say that it never gets that hot in Raton but , Ya know, stuff happens. I live in San Diego, and Dulzura will aproach that heat, but the humidity gauge I use just said LOW? Holy crap, how dry is that? I live in San Diego and these trips out of town remind me of how good we have it here, weather wise. Don't get me started on politics. And yes, we shot at Adair, curiously empty Sun morn.

roger,
ask old man klampett if you can borrow his eye?
I have known them since about 1982, I met alden up at angeles crest
and that was my downfall, but i did get a hell of an education in bpcs starting with a numrich arms roller that alden still has, and then a trapdoor!
If ya ever get down sanantonio way know ya have a place to shoot!
