Need help identifying possible Schuetzen
Jul 6th, 2012 at 7:50pm

Hello,

I have the following rifle and am hoping that someone can help me identify it, along with what kind of sights might belong to it and where I might find them.

The only markings it has are:
On the side of it is says "F. Glerchauf"
On the other side it says "Frankfurt A/M"
On the butt is has "1250" stamped into it

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you.

I would think it is German but don't have a clue other than that. Very nice and well made gun. Where are our German experts?

Looks like a real nice German-style schuetzen that is missing the front sight insert and the diopter rear sight.    Strongly suspect your'll find it is chambered nominally for the 8.14x46 rimmed cartridge which was the German equivalent of our .32-40.  You might want to carefully slug the bore since they do vary a bit in bore dimensions.
It appears that the German gun-builders purchased actions, barrels, sight sets and triggers from several mfgs and then barreled, chambered, added the commercially MFG sights and trigger sets; and then stocked the rifles to ft the customer and his/her needs.  The fit of a German schuetzen stock can be critical to modern usability.  If they fit the owners face/shoulder/arm configuration they can be a dream for offhand shooting.  If they don't they can range from inconvenient to miserable.  I "tried on" a bunch and passed on them until I found a couple that fit me.

Cases and bullets/moulds are available.

Someone will come along with more info on the maker etc though it may take a couple days.

you might remove the forend and see if there are any markings on the underside of the barrel.
Missing sights is a downer and could make a $300-500 value difference. You MIGHT get lucky and find a rear diopter that fits, but its a long shot.  supposedly someone is making the rear sights, but I have not seen any and the problem is fitting the rifle's sight base.  some guys talented with the right tool have hand crafted sights for their own rifles.   The front sight is a small post, often with protective ears that slips into the front longitudinal dovetail and is retained by the spring.  one could be created by hand with scrap steel, a hacksaw, files and elbow grease and a bunch of patience

If the barrel has a dovetail rib ahead of the frame;  Steve Earle makes a really good low profile adapter sight base that accepts standard target scope blocks.   I have several on rifles that do not have the rear sight

added note:  shooting them off the bench can be a PITA.  It can be done but the drop in the stock and the thin blade-like butt make getting them on the bags and rest a touchy iffy thing.

I looked at the pics again.  I don't see a protruding thumb rest which is a schuetzen feature.   It may possibly be a "stalking" or light hunting rifle.  I have a couple and they share a lot of characteristics with the full-blown target rifles.  Mine have stocks that do not have thumbrests or the larger deeply dished cheek pieces

Its a normal German schuetzen rifle manufactured approx. 1890-1900 in Martini style action.

The maker is "Ferdinand Gleichauf" located in "Bockenheim", a district of "Frankfurt am Main".

The cheek piece is in "Bavarian" style, so it might fit to everybody - compared with a Tyrolean cheek, this has to fit like a glove or you cannot shoot with it (like DWS already mentioned). Its only made for shooting off hand, never ever for bench shooting!

Cannot say anything how it is chambered without a view in the open breech block / barrel and the markings information under the forearm.

What a pity, the sights are missing (as usual). It needs a normal German sight to adjust in elevation and left/right. But there was a big variety of different bases to mount it to the rifle.

Need more information. Please take close-up pics of the rear sight base, front sight base and especially the markings under the forearm.

Subject to correction by more knowledgable people, I recall reading that there was a German target-shooting game where only V-notch sights could be used with a post in front.  A friend has such a rifle, and the long dovetail on the rib allows the V-notch rear sight to be moved back and forth to better focus for the individual shooter's eyes.  My friend's rifle has the base for the diopter sight as well, which is missing.

I'm unclear on how to remove the forearm, I've got some ideas, but naturally with a gun this age I would not want to experiment.  It looks like it might be a kind of pin that goes through.

I've also included another picture of the rear sight mount.

i have the field sight that slides along the rib for my Schuetzen rifle. I also have a scope with a windage adjustable mount, made to fit on the rib--the only one that I have ever seen.

For removing the forearm, you have to use a a big flat screwdriver to push out the bolt from the side where is no cap on the bolt. Slide out the bolt and release the forearm easy.

Should work like that, also with your rifle.

I think this rifle was never used with such a scope sight. Its a normal German target rifle with a missing rear sight.

There were a lot of different kinds of bases. Your rear sight mount might be used with two different kinds, I think.

One kind is to mount with a "two-feet-base", a round one and a square one.

The other kind is shown in my attached picture: the square hole for the square base-foot and the round hole for the screw thread.

For those of you who have rifles that are missing shghts.  If they have a rib like he has shown us in the second series of photos The Steve Earle rib mount will work perfectly to mount a 'scope sight.

Steve is a big supporter of the ASSRA and other programs for single shot rifles.  it is impossible to say enough good things about him and the quality of his products.  he can be reached at 781-585-3929 and has a web site at  www.steveearleproducts.com

here is a direct link to the rib mount

Thanks for the direction on removing the front hand cover, it seemed logical but I did not want to make an assumption.

I removed the cover and this is what I found:  the first picture is what was imprinted on the chamber.

The remaining three pictures are what was stamped on the barrel.

I can't help with the markings but I'd sure like to complement you on the quality of the photos.  We get lots of inquiries accompanied with cell-phone quality pictures.  I appreciate seeing these and wish I could take ones as good
