Please ban the topic of POLITICS

This site is for SINGLE SHOT RIFLERY.  The discussions of politics in particular has brought out many vicious and bigoted comments and strings.  They are clearly not within the scope nor the nature of the ASSRA.  Placing such a limitation on the forum would not detract from ANY of the discussions of Single Shot Riflery and would better present us to the public.

I couldn't agree more.  When I read some of the comments, I'm ashamed to have some of those opinions representing to the world what we, the ASSRA, are about.

Reading the political threads, you can see where the term "gun nuts" came into use in the media!

Might I make a suggestion? If a poll was posted in the general discussion area asking forum members if the off topic area should be limited to ONLY firearm related topics we could see what the forum members want. I would also suggest putting in that initial post to post no comments, just vote. I would not want to monitor the replies  as it is a chance for some to post more negative remarks. Based on the results we could present it to the BoD for a decision.

For me, 90% of my moderator time is spent policing this area

Just my unsolicited opinion

A poll is a good idea.

I think the off-topic area SHOULD include some non-firearm related topics; like humor, but NOT politics.

Is it not just the politics that has gone rogue?

I agree. People should be able to engage in a debate of hot topics without resorting to name calling or unsolicited condescension. I do admit it is sometimes difficult to resist getting pulled into issues I feel passionate about. Guilty as charged. As long as we try to be respectful of one another I don't see a problem. Just my humble opinion.

Merry Christmas,

Believe I have been in the Off Topic Chatter forum only a couple of times.  Doesn't matter to me if political threads are verboten or not.

I rarely go into the "off-topic" stuff, but...
The problem is that whatever is going on in there is trickling out into the other sections of the forum.
The bickering and the cat-fighting is not going to help this site in the least.
I have seen firearm related sites come and go because of this kind of thing.
I would hate to see this wealth of information disappear because of some childish schoolyard crap tearing it apart.
Once you start down that road, it's a fast one-way trip.
Just my 2 cents,
Dave

I feel the way most liberals do , you can ban everybody's political comments but mine. As Ray Day used to say, now that's fair deal.

I think banning political topics is unwise, but if it is done, then it should be vigorously enforced.

I am on some professional web boards that do that, and they are better for it.

This is a social web site.

If you like your political discussion, you can keep it. Period.

as a host admin of a very large and very active public forum, i expect members to treat everyone with the same respect and courtesy they would expect from others, no matter how difficult that may be. no flaming, hate, politics, religion, sex, sports or drug discussions allowed, ever.  and, topics and posts must be kept within the intent and objective(s) of the forum.

all non-admin members of a free, public forum, are guests of the site's host(s), and must agree to these (and other) terms when they register.

anything NOT to do within the direct focus of the forum's prime intent (as defined by the site host(s) during a member's registration) is at the discretion of the site host(s) and should either not be allowed anywhere, or only allowed in one specific forum.

if there is a specific off-topic forum, moderation of that forum should also be at the discretion of the site host(s), not the membership - they're guests, they don't run the ship.

I agree with Bullshot, if political issues are gun related, we really need to stay vigilant.
Maybe keep political discussions focused on firearms ?

I see no reason to ban political discussion in "Off Topic chatter" especially that related to the second amendment.

The simple solution to this situation as I see it is in the searching for previous posts - give the searcher the option of a search eliminating any posts from the Off Topic Chatter topic or any other topic of no interest.

Can that not be done?

Or should just let the negative instigator/instigators of unrest burn this forum to the ground.

Disappointed member! I am here for Single Shot rifle discussion and related information.

If I should log in tomorrow to find that both my own ALONG WITH Grisen's Political Posts had magically disappeared from the Off-Topic Chatter section, I would be surprised... and pleasantly pleased as well.     Smiley

2nd Amendment news and alerts to upcoming firearms legislation should be posted as it becomes available.

There are posters who never post anything about Single Shot Rifles, only political post.

I ignore anything they say, same way I handle face to face political agitators, my point of view included.  Easier on the forum than in person. I have friends that vote the way I do, still ignore political rants they make.

Perhaps a sub forum of "Off Topic" called "Politics" for members that need their safe place.

Politics can encroach in every aspect of our lives, if we let it.  I've always followed the old rule "don't discuss politics or religion at work" which makes work more pleasant for everyone.  In clubs, which this is, I also may say a few views once in a while, but try to keep on topic. The hard part is when someone asserts something I don't agree with.   So of course I want to argue. It's a bait, to start up another unending argument about XYZ president, congressman, city, party, etc.

One problem as a new member of this forum is there isn't an easy way to see new gun related posts.  I eventually discovered the "show last 5, 10, 20, or 25 posts" button.  But was frustrated that even if I do it every day or two, the ONLY posts that show up are usually political debate or rants.  Which I ignore (see first para).  So I have to either avoid this forum, or tediously enter each sub forum and see if something new is there.
