A very substantial appreciation above the original purchase price!

It looks like he's only about $6000 off.

Maybe Pope touched them, just before he died.

Also, the set is not complete as mentioned if the missing base is still "affixed to the rear tang of the rifle". Unless, the rifle comes with it..........

Back in the early 1980's I sold a cased set to Steve Garbe for $1500. I needed funds for a gun purchase, and wish I'd never had to sell the set, as I knew I wouldn't ever buy another as cheap as I sold them.
But from what I've seen the few sell for, the set on Gunsinternational is still high, but not as high as you might think. I'm sure they've gone up in the 35 years since I sold my set.
A Long Range Ballard sight alone can go over $1,000 most the time.

I don't see the condition of that sight as mint or even close to it.

Now, I don't have any idea of the worth of the case but, I certainly wouldn't put the sight, itself above $600 in it's existing condition.

The other thing is, at even though something may sell at a rare moment, for a high price, that doesn't make it actually worth the rare high price. We all see that kind of pricing on Ebay, as a "Buy It Now".

I have a mint Winchester, Mid Range rear sight that came with my DST HW and I used to watch for them on Ebay, to see what they were worth. 5 years ago, there where Buy It Now ones priced at $600 but, I never saw one sell (maybe I missed it Smiley ).

I also don't know what the price differial might be, between the two but, I doubt it very much, if any.

I'll give odds on if it will sale at that price Smiley

I doubt it will, as I've looked at the ad for a very long time! I agree it's too much, but even with it's less than mint condition, I've never seen a Ballard Long Range sight sell under $1000 in a decade or more. The mid range are very common, and I see them often for as low as $300 in worn shape, to up around $400 for excellent shape.
The long range, and the even rarer early tall mid range (halfway between a long range and a mid range height) are so rarely seen that when they do come up for sale they go nuts. In all my years of owning Ballard rifles and sights, I've only owned two long range sights, and I still have both on the guns. Never bought one separately because they're always too spendy for me.
I check Ebay often, and comparing Ballard sights to Winchester is pretty even for mid range vernier. But I see a lot of long range Winchester sights on Ebay, but never see a Ballard long range on Ebay. I wouldn't compare the prices for the long range on the two.

This is just my opinion and, of course, I haven't the money anyway.  But if I had, for Frank's $750 I'd buy every cased long-range set, even sans tang sight base, anybody's and everybody's, that I could find.  I'd also bet that after a good many years, my hoard could still be easily counted on two hands.  But they'd all be mine, MINE, MINE!

I've seen the cases go more than that. I think original cases are a huge part of the value. Especially if you already own a Ballard with all the correct sights. It makes an important piece of the package to complete a fine rifle.
I've looked around for original cases, but none for sale. I think Ballard Rifle Co. when they existed in Cody offered repro cased sets as an accessory to their rifles? Seems I saw them in one of their catalogs I have here.

That set at Wards better go cheap! Condition is poor, and missing the sight base. My buddy bought a nice cased set at the Denver show in May for $3200.

Price will be in $CDN. It states that the rifle was sold prior to the consignor purchasing the sight set also says the set contains a "rare top hood".

The sight base was probably on the rifle when sold.

Not sure what a "top hood" is.

The red Shepherd's Note Book contains records of shooting out to 1000yds by a J.Grant in the Dominion and Metropolitan Rifle Matches in Ottawa during 1877-79.

Why would the price be in CDN? Wards is located in Salem, Oregon. They conduct their auctions in US funds.

Vall,

It looks to be a different company than Wards collectibles.  Totally different auction web site.  I thought the same thing until I visited the site.
