1885 Winchester Breech Block Rebuild - With pics

I know there are many ways to do this work.  This was a combination of methods from de Haas, my own observations of similar work, and what I needed to do to correct prior, poor quality, work from an unknown shop.

The rear bushing is threaded, the front is retained by the cross pin.  The lever, hammer and link were altered so the block only rises to bore centerline, not above and then back down.  And the hammer now cams completely off of the sprung firing pin before the block starts to drop.

Thank you both, it was enjoyable work for the most part.  The chamber and extractor cut were hacked up as well so the barrel was set back and those features cleaned up too.

Just really like builds like these especially when they are done with pictures showing what was done and in sequence with the build. Thanks very much for posting. Frank

Indeed a great thread and one could only wish there were more educational threads just like it. Kellyrepair was that a grade 8 bolt that you used for the bushings.

Yes sir, that rear bushing is a grade-8 bolt.  The front is turned from a piece of that fatigue proof steel that I also use for firing pins. I can't think of the number off the top of my head.

From the location you live at I'm guessing that you read a little Dan Jenkins at one time?

No, I'm sorry, I have no idea who that is.  Was he a Gunsmith? or someone who referred to Florida as the southern extension of New York?

I assume you are talking about the LeSalle fatigue proof steel and I don't recall it having a specific number when I ordered mine but it was a variety pack and really quite pricey so I only use it for specific projects.

Great impact strength material among others things and a real pleasure to work with.
