The 9.3x72R began life as a black powder cartridge.  It transitioned into the early 1900s as a smokeless cartridge usually found in Drillings and Combination Guns. Frank Barnes in his Cartridges of the World states it is the equivalent of the 38-55 Winchester.  1902 actions are regularly chambered for the 38-55 with no issues.  Of course hot-rodding a cartridge is typically not a good idea.
