C Dell lube pump

I seem to have too much time on my hands because I'm considering making a series of dies for my Dell lube pump " that I never use" seems I remember that they can be made from Delrln or nylon, is this true. I would be grateful for any and all info.  Ledball

Paul- Charlie will stomp you Wink! Yes, either will work, but will suggest adding a flange outside the pump head- like a top hat. Even with the aluminum ones sometimes the O ring can be forced out due to lube pressure.

Thanks guys, I had one die with this pump, it doesn't seem to fit any bullet I have , maybe it's for Charlie's bullet. The problem with these pumps is you have to have a die for about every bullet, now that would use up all my free time.  Ledball

I had a few oddball dies for mine and just bored them out to sizes I could use. Did me no good to have extras in sizes I'd never use.

Ledball. I like the way real Delrin machines.  Lot of times you ask for Delrin they ship plastic that is like Delrin not the real thing. Name is marked on the rod.

I have epoxy bedded close fitting bullets in the past and it worked very well and they did leak by but only filled the grooves

Haven't got my copy handy, but I think Charlie Dell's book, "The Modern Schuetzen Rifle" may have pictures?
But a quick search of this forum brought up this thread from 2013:

My Dell lube pump has an aluminum main body. Did Charlie or someone else make his pump with an aluminum body also?

Yes the Dell pump main body is made of aluminum, it will also have a serial number and a stamp that looks like a chestnut. Ledball

IIRC, Charlie's first lube pumps used a "head" that he soldered up from pieces of brass, an aluminum body tube, and a brass end plate that the threaded rod engaged through.  The rest of the small pieces were of steel or brass as appropriate and Charlie's individually fitted dies were made of aluminum... he was adamant about that.  I have one of 40Rod's Delrin dies though and it works great, I just couldn't tell Charlie!  Roll Eyes

Once he got going on a semi-production basis, Charlie had a casting made for the heads and made up tooling to finish it off like the pieced-together version.  This was not only quicker and easier, but probably quite a bit stronger as well.

Like everything else Charlie ever did, he studied the problem and solved it to what he considered to be the best end point.  You may not have understood all the whys and wherefores, but you could be sure it would work when he got done.

I have used pumps I got from him (whole or parts to build DIY, but that's another story) ever since I started shooting, and if I have a bullet I'm using a lot, it seems to be the best way to go.  I do have one of the copies of the original Pope-made pump that Joe Ruth made up about 30+ years ago and since it is such a pretty brass unit and so small, I'll probably have an insert made for it to lube my quarter bore bullets.  That would be cute, huh?  Cool

Jake Simmons made a similar "pope style" lube pump copied I assume from Dell's version. I have one of the last ones he made before he stopped making them.

Barry Darr also made some however as I recall his had a bronze head unit with a bench-clamp----I had one of those at one time as well.

I have a B Darr version, and it's a very accurate copy of the Pope. I think he worked off a casting that was an original Pope lube pump. Beautiful workmanship, as one would always expect from anything Barry Darr touched.

Joe Ruth made exact replicas of the Pope pump. If you look through Tom Rowe's new book you will see that there are many lube pumps all very similar seems every gunsmith made a version of Harwood's pump.
I have heard recently that in the next year or so access to castings for the Pope pump may become available.
Let me state for the record that this is still in the spitball stage and I will not reveal my sorce so that you all can pester him.
