Yesterday morning the news here was interviewing businesses at the Oregon Coast. The Chinook Winds Indian casino was crying the blues about having 30 some empty rooms! Mo's restaurant said their business was down 50% from even a normal summer weekend!
They were guessing that all the hype of tourist traffic, and morning fog scared people from coming to the Coast, and thus the low attendance. They were begging people to come down and spend money!!
Afraid I had to chuckle a bit.

Live views from Wieser and other areas did not look like they were up to expectations either.  The 30 mile back up at Prineville must have spooked 'em.

Lots of yelling and oohing and awing and applause from the fair grounds just a block away when it went total. Spectacular but just for a very short time.

I could have gone to Nashville, but blew it off figuring they'd be clouded out.   NOT!    (But of course if I HAD gone, they would have been....)

Clear here in SE Ohio, as of 2:00 PM local the sun is 1/4 covered. Not going to be total here, only 96%.   If I can stay alive until 2024, there will be a better chance.   In 2099 one goes right over my house, but I won't see it.

99% here at our house, but never got close to darkness. Looked dusky, and colder. Amazing what 1% sunlight can do to illuminate the earth!
The big surprise was at almost full eclipse, there were shadows dancing across the ground in weird patterns! Never expected that!

3:00 PM local, well past greatest coverage, clouds moving in. Radar shows pop-up thunderstorms forming to the west. At least I saw a little.

We got a clear shot at 2:51PM about 87%.
Boring. Better on TV, just like the Daytona 500. Hope I'm around in 2024, maybe that one will be more interesting.
It was a little cooler so I used the time to start the Corvair and warm her up.

We had  about 98% coverage here in Salmon.  Interesting, but not really a big deal.  Didn't really get dark at all, but that is normal.  It did cool down some though as the sun was blocked by the moon.  Highway 93 was a continuous line of traffic headed south this morning.  By 1PM it was a continuous line headed back north.  Wonder what the next media event will be?

Report from Bellevue - the hordes never materialized at all.  Traffic southbound on 75 this afternoon was typical weekday rush hour.  Businesses must be sitting on truckloads of unsold merchandise.   Cry

"Return your solar eclipse glasses and cancel your sun-watching parties, America. According to The Atlantic, Monday's predicted total solar eclipse is, it turns out, racist.

At first glance, the headline, "American Blackout" appears to be an attempt to one-up the Boston Globe, who claimed that the sun, dastardly conservative that it is, was biased towards Trump supporters, since the swath of the country that will witness 100% coverage, is made up, mainly, of counties that went for Trump in the 2016 election.

But no, the essay, penned, unsurprisingly, by a university professor Alice Ristroph of Brooklyn Law School insists that the solar system, which itself exhibits signs of "implicit bias," has it out for minorities.

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people. Presumably, this is not explained by the implicit bias of the solar system.

I think we can safely presume, yes, that the solar system is not capable of exhibiting either implicit nor explicit biases or, frankly, any preferences whatsoever. But of course, that doesn't mean the solar system itself isn't guilty of, say, "inanimate object privilege.""

This is what happens when you expect drugs to do the work of insane asylums.

Boy Howdy! We had idiots everywhere, traffic on the two lane roads was miserable, almost as bad on the two track roads - from all walks and even far away lands.  Had to turn off the southbound highway twenty miles north of the area reaching totality!
My son and I did a study of how this dark in the middle of the day affected the prairie dog - Smiley
Our chosen area for this study-the alternate area - because of the crowds didn't reach total darkness but it was close,  I don't think it was because of the noise our weapons made, but when it got dark and the temp dropped 30 degrees, they all went down their holes and it was almost a 20 minute wait before they showed themselves again, they were confused and from then on we consumed most of the ammo we had.  We're suffering tonight from eye strain, finger cramps, sunburn and shoulder pain from this workout.  Grin
