where to go
Sep 5th, 2017 at 11:49pm
Print Post
I'm bugging out.
I'm near Daytona, does anyone have suggestions to get me out of storm path, but not too far? Someplace in W. Georgia perhaps?
I want to get back as soon as the power returns.
I have my disabled friend and Rebel the Wonderdog to take care of.
Pack up a few favorite rifles, (can't take them all) some food and water, and go.
Aaron

The latest spaghetti plots aren't encouraging. Out of 20+ plots, most have the storm center moving straight north through Georgia.

But basically all you need is out of the worst winds and above flood stage.  Gainesville shows at 140 feet ASL on my deLorme maps.   Up I-95 to I-10, then west to I-75 and go north from there toward Valdosta.  You'll still be in the path but by the time it gets there it should have calmed down a little.

I-75 north to Tifton then west on 82 to Sylvester.  But NOT as far as Albany.  Been there.  Low ground that floods like crazy.  Sylvester is 400 AGL and no large watercourses.

Many motels in Tifton.  There's a Days Inn at Sylvester.  And a Worth Inn.

Weather Channel spaghetti plots here:

I wouldn't stop until I hit Kansas and then to only refuel for the drive to the other side of the Rockies....this could be the storm that tops Hugo!

Maybe.  I'm in Ohio, but some of the plots show Irma passing right by us.  Shocked   What's left of it anyway.  We do NOT need more rain.

I'd head NW Aaron! Not sure you're going to get away from it if you want to not travel too far!
Sure hope you and your friend survive unscathed, and your place is OK too!

Rebel,
If you head to the far Northwest (OR, WA, MT), take plenty of that rain with you! The place is burning up. It's odd how the weather patterns are shaping up this year. Good luck wherever you land.

thanks LD,
If you could PM me your address, the planes are still flying.
Actually, I've been very sick for a couple of weeks, and my "help" to put up the plywood over the windows has disappeared, hopefully I'll get some help in time.
By now, all the roads are parking lots and soon a lot of people on the hiways will be out of gas in their lanes. I'm about 300 miles from Miami, so people should be using up a tankful right about here.
Looks like I'm here for the storm. My home has good elevation and drainage, and the latest forecast looks a bit better for central Florida. Just had the gutters done too.
I remember how much the news worried everyone up north about blizzards that only dumped 10" of snow.
They got everyone pretty worried now, but I think for good reason this time.

I got the last 8 sheets at True Value 2 days ago.
Home Depot and Lowes are sold out. I have water, but they were also sold out at WinDixie yesterday.
Silly people don't know enough to fill jugs with tap water.
Got an extra 10 gallons of gas for the genset this morning, got a clue on a station that just got a delivery. Got a promise for plywood help for later today.
I feel pretty well prepared.

Thanks everyone.
Yeah, not feeling too good and got the plywood up later that I wanted to, now the roads are a mess.
Heading out to the grocery tonight, hopefully for canned food it will takes years to eat.
Still ready if evacuation is called,
Aaron

Well, canned stuff lasts for years and years.  If you don't eat it up now, it'll be good for the next hurricane.

Seeing the TV images of all the traffic jams in Fla makes me curious about the amount of planning that went into any evacuation orders.  When you tell 2 million older & affluent people to leave, you are putting a million cars on the road. If they each go 600 miles @ 20 mpg, that is 30 million gallons of gas.  How much gas is there in Florida?  How many gas stations?  How many gallons per station?

Two tankers just came into port with 1 million gallons each, but you have to distribute it.
Lots of poor folk in the Keys, they work two jobs so they can live there. Life in the Keys is really boring, you can fish and booze, that's about it. OK for a bit, but it gets really old.
I'm at least 6 miles from the ocean, about 3 from the Intercoastal.
I don't think there's a problem there.
If we get 10" of rain my pool will overflow. Gonna check it out tomorrow and perhaps drain it down.
So far, so good,
Aaron

Sounds like the description I once heard of Grand Marais, Michigan.  "A quaint drinking village with a severe hunting and fishing problem."   Roll Eyes

Pool will provide beaucoup washing and sanitation water once it refills.

Are you equipped to keep your cellphone and computer charged up during the height of the storm?  Running a generator will be iffy.  We want to see realtime videos of the eye.

I'm only going to drain the pool down a foot or so.
Empty pools have been known to pop out of the ground, the water table is very high here. An empty pool is like a boat.
I have a car jump pack with a USB outlet that should keep a cell phone going if my genset runs dry or quits.
Latest forecast looks like we'll see about 100mph sustained winds here near Daytona.

Arron, I will take a Nor'easter over a hurricane any day. At least after it snow stops it does not take long to snow blow it away, then I am on my way.

Take care.

Kinda looks like a million man march. Thousands of folks pitched in to help down in Texas from surround states. They showed up with camo waders and jon boats towed behind good ole pickups. They didn't show up in tiny cookie cutter bmw's worried about designer coffee and their head down phone time.

Storm is moving little west of north.  I would go straight up the coast I 95 and rt 17 run a little east of north. As younger further north storm moves away from you and your angle is improving.

Down side is if turns east. That seems a remote possibility

I think Irma hit here last night! Must have been around 7:00 p.m. I smelled rain, and the street was wet! Bet we got almost 1/10" in a couple hours, and then back to bone dry!

A little while ago they said it is a 3 and on the SW corner moving N at 14 mph.

Looks like FL will fare better than previous predictions.  Irma blew everything off nortbern Cuba and dome of the Caribbean Islands.

Relax and cast a few bullets to pass the time.

Was just reading a report about how tens of thousands of people weathered the storm in their cars.  Somehow this evacuation business just doesn't work.   You did the right thing.

Glad you're doing well Aaron! I'm sure this winter you'll be zinging us again about how warm you are there! Not so much now though!

Our snow tends to make things green and beautiful the next season. What do hurricanes improve?

Things stay green here Bob.
Cable just came back on, still no power and no utility trucks in sight.
WA has too many liberals, Florida is better on gun laws as I understand it Maybe Tennessee is the perfect place, can't say.
Thanks for everyone's good wishes,
Aaron

They don't call this the left coast just because of geography.   Sad   Doesn't matter if I contact my elected officials, they aren't going to change their minds anyway.  Cry

If cable came back, power must be in the area looking for you.

Hi Bob,
The power came back on about 1/2 hour ago, temp is coming down in the house from a very humid 86 degrees.
About 200 hours now on my little genset between this year and last, time for bit of maintenance now.
