Ballard Straight Grip Reciever?
Nov 6th, 2017 at 5:39pm
Print Post
Know that the Ballard receivers are different for straight & pistol grip stocks. If one has a straight-grip receiver, how does one put on a pistol grip stock? Is it a fairly simple process of simply fitting the wood or is it more involved then that?
Thanks.

Not really a big deal.  Just feather it in with a gentle radius.  I've done several, here's one.

Here's another.  You might have to bend your lever just a little.

Thx. That's some nice wood on those rifles. Pretty much what I remembered on fitting a PG stock.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not that anyone would rework an original Ballard pistol grip stock. But if you're restocking a straight grip you can simply order a pistol grip stock blank and remove the extra wood where it meets the receiver to make it a pistol grip on a straight grip receiver.

Here's another example:

This post was very timely for me as I had "got the bug again" last week and dug out a .32-40 octagon barreled JMarlin Ballard straight grip project... been collecting parts for the last several years... and have a nice stick of shaped wood for a No 8 LR. Need to get a few parts for the dst breech block as well as either make or buy the dst trigger group. Thinking I'm going to get to work reaming that tapered seat so I can get the stock fitted up and roughed in. Smiley

Dave Crossno Gun Service offers several pistol grip stock patterns for straight grip Ballard actions; 405-396-8786.

A 1" step bit and a coarse rat tail file do a good job of relieving the tang area.
