CPA 44 1/2 30-30
Nov 22nd, 2017 at 12:27pm
Print Post
New to the forum and also new to CPA rifles. I have a rifle ordered with .22 RF and 45/70 Barrels. Im now thinking of adding a 30-30 barrel too. I want this barrel to be 24, light contour for hunting. Anybody have this set up in a CPA?
Thanks

Welldone, the best recommendation for your specifics about a 30-30 barrel is to call CPA and talk with them

I have a #2 contour in 30-40 krag, 26 long. I used a 1 screw forearm. Makes a nice, light set up for hunting and knocking around! moodyholler

I had a CPA with a 28" 30-30 barrel in #1 weight/profile. Very nice handling and accurate. If you're going to hunt with a scope, a 24" or a 26" would be nice, if you're going with irons, a tang sight and a 28" barrel will give you just a bit more sight radius.

For hunting, I'd go with a #1 weight barrel. My CPA was burned up last month in the CA wildfires. I've got a new one on order with a 28" #1 weight barrel. Liked it so much, had to replace it!

I believe CPA's barrel numbers are pretty close to old Winchester numbers that most people use to determine diameters. So a #1 weight is .94" at the receiver, and a #2 is 1.0" So very little difference between the two barrel diameters. Even a #3 is only 1.05", so that's not a huge jump from a #1 weight.
The barrel length will do more to change the weight than contour differences from #1 to #3.

Great ideas and points of view. I hunt in mostly close cover / swampy type land with an occasional 200 yard shot. I may use a scope but for now Ill go with tang and post.......as long as I can still see OK.The shooter barrel seems like it would be a little handier but I also am concerned about asthetics. Is the gun gonna look chopped off and stupid ? Anybody got any pics of a short barrel CPA?

I think anything under 26" will indeed look out of proportion. Even more so if a heavier barrel weight is chosen. I wouldn't go below 26" as the extra 2" wont save much weight, and looks stubby.

Let's see if this works. My (lost) CPA; #1 28" 30-30 barrel on left, #2 32" 32-40 on right, rifle wearing a 30" #3 40-72 Win barrel. Nice little Stevens Favorite far left, nice shooter, sadly also lost.

Well, sorry, can't figure out how to insert the pic into the page. Just follow the link.

Are you using the "BCC" link at Imgur to post?

Vall, I tried various of the imgur links for that photo, just can't seem to insert it. Got it to work once, but it was huge. Sized it down and I can't repeat how I got it inserted.

Go to the bottom of the Imgur page and it allows you to choose the size there before clicking on the "BCC code". I usually choose "large" and then click "BCC Code"
Then go to the post and hold "cntrl" and tap the "v" key and it will insert in the reply. Be sure to drop down a line when inserting, or it will be mixed into typed reply.

Gents-
I have a CPA 44 1/2 w/two barrels, soon to add a third-
Original barrel is a #2, 28" 30wcf; second barrel is a #2, 30" 32-40.  Soon to be added will be a 32" 38-55.
I like longer barrels for aesthetics (just looks better to my eye), and "hangs" better for the occasional offhand shot.  The longer barrel on the 38-55 will be to offset the weight lost due to the larger bore diameter and provides additional sight radius needed for old eyes.
Exibition grade wood (I'm a certified woodnut!) on a fine CPA has no place on a true, dedicated hunting rifle, as I'm afraid to damage it in the field.
For hunting small game, and as a training rifle for the grand-kids (I'm getting old), I've selected a vintage 44 1/2 action, which I will have Gail & Paul restore and build up as a #1, 26" 25-20wcf.  This will be stocked with plain grained walnut, no cheekpiece, and hunting sights, such as Lyman or Marbles tang sights,  not my fine MVA sights.
I've just laid in a supply of 500 new cases in 25-20wcf to ensure the young-uns need not worry about components.
I ramble on, so for now, shoot straight, and teach a youngster to appreciate our sport/hobby, lest it die with us---
