Velvet Buck with 40-65 Single Shot

This is definitely Johnny Cash's Deer Rifle if One Piece At A Time had been about a rifle instead of a Cadillac.  The barrel is a Farmingdale Shiloh Sharps #1 Heavy Octagon originally chambered in 40-70 Shiloh Bottleneck now rechambered to 40-65 Winchester. Action is a Falling Block Works Model J. Stocks and buttplate were purchased as 90% from CPA and eventually fitted and finished by Crossno when it became apparent I wasn't up to the challenge. Steve Earle blocks and a 10X 2" Unertl scope.  A little over 4 years elapsed between the time I decided to do something with the barrel and actually getting it done. It all got finished the week before deer season so I zeroed the scope with 3 year old BPCR ammo I'd made for another rifle with the same reamer.  410 gr 30:1 from a P&D Jones 40001 mold over 68 gr of Swiss 1 1/2 in Starline brass.

This cryptorchid buck was in range Saturday but I was holding out for a better buck.  Sunday I was less picky.  Teeth indicate he was 5 years old and since he's a steer anyway he is tasty eating.

Here's our resident cactus buck in my backyard. One time when hunting I found the evidence of a buck having steered himself by not quite clearing a barbed wire fence. That must have smarted!

Yes that must have!  Cry  A friend told me about shooting a deer that bounded just as he fired. There was blood and  strange drag marks on the trail.  When he found it, the bullet hat unzipped his abdomen.  His guts fell out and that was what he was dragging.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!
