What letter code is stamped on the bottom of the sight base?

for BP and Slumlord44 - I missed the ID completely. It is 1 1/2" hole spacing and marked WF - I guess when I bought it many years ago, I euchered big time!

That's Stevens' spacing--so are you saying you cut down a Winchester sight?  But not one for a 52--Lyman made plenty of 52 sights, but none were tang sights.

And there is a photo of a 103 mounted on the comb of a Model 52 (on a WF base) and this:

Has anyone seen a 52 with a Lyman 103?
Kurt

I have seen two of them mounted on rifles over the years; both were Pre-A Model 52s. By the 1930's there were much more appropriate means of putting sights on the Model 52, so they kind of petered out. It's nice to see pictures of your sight!

Got to be one rare SOB! I found it listed as WF in Lyman #18 (1930) but it's de-listed by #25, the next newer one I have.  Any tang sight on a 52 would look ungainly to me, esp. since I love the standard early 82a sight, which I shoot with several times a wk.

Different strokes for different folks!

Attached are pictures of a Lyman 103 mounted on a Stevens Model 404. The hole spacing is 1-1/2 and the letter stamp on the sight is "P".

I'm skeptical that Lyman did more than take some of their regular Stevens sights & mark them WF to imply they were "specially adapted" to the 52.

Maybe this will work. This 52 apparently belonged to Niedner.

The only way you'll ever know is to compare the height of the staffs (not including the stem and disc) between the WF and P sights, and also determine if the holes and seats machined in the bases for the mounting screws are the same or not.
That info isn't found in the catalogs and advertisements.
