You are correct SL44. No way to document Stevens rifles-for sure.
Unless someone out there has bound factory records stashed in an old trunk in Massachusetts.

I am STILL trying to get pictures of this rifle taken to properly show its graceful lines. Patience-patience. May have to break out my 35mm Nikon and wire it in. Phone camera acting up.
If I can't get decent pictures-may have to re-list.

Maybe I should just keep this rifle-it will be difficult to replace it with another like it.

I'd sure love to see the provenance or documentation that confirms the gun is either one of 65 made, or #65 of 700 made?
Considering how lacking Stevens info is, I'm excited to see the paperwork that nails this one down!

Specific descriptions are a must-- of wood and metal finish, mechanical condition, bore condition, weight and length of barrel and mechanical and optical condition of the scope.  It could have been ordered with optional extras such as extra quality wood, engraving beyond what was standard for whatever model it may be, etc. Removing the forearm will reveal the actual  model number stamped on the face of the receiver (47, 49, 52, etc). Do the numbers on the barrel, receiver and wood (face of forearm and under the buttplate) match?  Stevens Schuetzen rifles with special order features are not unknown--in fact a well known dealer had one listed recently ( (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links))

However, given the lack of information and the absence of photos, there is no way I would pursue this further.

I'd suggest a fishing spear.

Possibly, but some of the details suggest there's something there beneath that odor: mainly, the details of the scope, with two sets of mounts.  Original mounts for a Mogg would be fixed like Malcolm's, but conceivably, somewhere down the line, someone exchanged those for modern Lyman's. Anyway, it doesn't sound like a fiction someone would make up, unless they were seriously disturbed.

I may make him an offer as soon as the fortune that a Nigerian Prince has promised me arrives from Lagos.
