50cal. barrel information
Jul 12th, 2018 at 2:17pm
Print Post
BRC would like to recheck it's information on the 50cal. barrel.
The 50cal. barrels will be produced for lead bullet shooters and not for the 50cal. machine gun 1-15, twist barrel shooters.
Al would like suggestions on:
Bore and Groove Dia.
Width of lands
Twist rate
BRC will offer only one barrel in 50cal. and would like it to have the best overall appeal to 50cal. shooters.
Thanks for your help.

Ken,
I think you have to determine whether it would be worthwhile to tool up for the 50 cal.  Is there much of a demand for that caliber in a black powder rifle?  I just don't see that many shooters using them on the line anymore.

50 caliber twist rates are all over the place. The 50 EX uses a twist of 1 in 56", the 50-100-450 started at 1 in 48" and later ones were 1 in 36". The 50 Sharps was 1 in 36". Most have a bore of .500 and the groove can be .510 to .515. The 50-70 was 1 in 42 but I found that this will not work with the loads that I tried. Twist rate can very a lot depending on bullet weight. I have been going with a 1 in 28 twist with the last few I have made but have not heard back as to how well they are doing.

I recently acquired a .50 cal 1:24 twist cut-rifled barrel from Green Mtn for my Borchardt .50-90 SS project. A very nice barrel...

Old-Win,
Al keeps getting requests for BRC 50cal. barrels in lead bullet twists.
John,
Thanks for your input. BRC is looking at .500 bore and .510 groove with a 24 twist. I guess the question is what gr. bullet the shooters want to shoot. I would think on the lighter side with either 24 or 28 twist.
idjeffp,
Looks like a nice web site and barrel.

Thanks all for your feedback.
