Remington Long Range (Creedmore)

This barreled rifle action was recently available for auction.
This is the auction description, "Remington Rolling Block Sporting rifle, .44 S caliber, 34 half round/half octagon barrel, hooded adjustable front sight, brown patina, checkered wood forend, missing butt stock, S/N 695X; overall good condition with nice patina to metal surfaces, overall good bore, crisp action and markings, good wood forend. "
I bought thinking it might be a good project. I would need to make a stock and if the bore was bad I would re-bore to 45 cal or re-line. I love those 34" barrels.
So now the story gets really interesting. I called Val to see where he had got his buttstock for the Remington he recently built. During the conversation he said you know I just bought a orphan Remington long range buttstock a couple of weeks ago. OMG who would have thought. We agreed on a trade for some Ballard sights I had and he sent the stock. I then put a Remington tang sight (the sight is one of the ones Remington made back in the mid 90's) The front sight is a Lyman #7.
And to add a little cherry on top the bore was dirty and I cleaned it to find something quite unexpected...at some time and I think years and years ago the barrel was re-bored to 45 cal and chambered for the 3 1/4" case (45-120). I think long ago, whatever that really means, because the rifling is 8 groove, the land width is 1/2 the groove width and is left hand twist. It is beautiful on the inside.
The last pic is with the Vall stock fitted.

Very nice! I like long barreled Remington RBs. Lucky find on the buttstock. It looks like a good match to the rest of the rifle. Do you have a picture showing the whole buttstock on the rifle?

Turned out very nice.  Are you going to shoot out to 1,000 with it?

That's really cool!

I don't suppose that there are any markings on the barrel under the forearm to indicate who re-rifled it?

Chris.

Chris, I was hoping for "L L Hepburn", but no such luck. LOL

Only marking on the gun are those expected. Serial number on barrel under forearm and matches the action. Typical Remington on top barrel flat, and "44 S" on bottom of barrel in front of forearm.

As much as I hated parting with those stocks, there's no better place for them than on that Longrange Creedmoor rifle Lynn! They look perfect, and belonged with an original Creedmoor rifle.

The gun sure is a good looker! It's what I hope to someday find myself! Maybe this year in Denver I'll find one too! I see them every year, but never the right gun at the right price.

Aren't original barrels 5 groove and right hand twist?

I think you are correct with the right hand twist but I was thinking 6 groove, however I am no expert. This rifle originally was a 44-77 with a groove diameter between .449 to .450. The barrel now has a bore diameter of .450 and a groove of ~.458.
I sure would like to know who re-bored and re-rifled the barrel in 8 groove with a left hand twist. The re-boring would be easy enough but not many barrelmakers/smiths have a rifling machine that can do 34" barrels and then left hand twist.

On my Hepburns,  the E. Remington & Son barrels are 5 groove  and the Remington Arms  barrels are 6.

I made a bullet mold for the new Remington today. I intend to shoot paper patch in it. I rebored an old Lyman I had. Then I cast up a few to see the results and they weigh 500 grs.

Lynn,
Are you planning on shooting your Roller at one of the LR matches at Harris this year?  I wan't to shoot my Borchardt and have it up and running by the August match but I need to fit a new rear sight with windage.  Now days, they frown on you when looking down the muzzle and making changes. Shocked
