My Wish List Just Happened

My greatest interest in BPCR is shooting the Long Range Target Rifle and wished I could own an original. Recently, the auction prices have been falling like a rock probably due to our ages and who still has an interest in these fine rifles.† I put in a bid and it was the only one so now I have† an 1878 LR Borchardt on itís way.† It comes with a letter showing it was sold to an Albert F Mitchell in 1879.† Yesterday, I started researching him and found out he was in the Civil War and later became a trustee of the city of Saratoga Springs, NY. Albert served in company K, 38th Regiment of NYS Volunteers and was mustered in in June of 1861. The 38th fought at the battles of the first Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove,White Oak Swamp, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and others.† He definitely Saw the Elephant . He was one of the leaders of the Reunion of the Potomac Army get togethers.† He'd have been 37 when he bought the rifle and was an officer of the Saratoga Rifle Club.† Even found a picture of his tombstone on findagrave.com.† Kind of fun finding out that information.† Hopefully, I can find more info on him and what matches the rifle may have been used in.The rifle should be shipped this week.† Can't wait to see it and am planning on shooting it in a couple of matches.

What a beauty! I too have a love of these long barreled guns, especially those made specifically for longrange work! I doubt they come much nicer than this Borchardt you won at auction!
The history of the owner is just a huge plus to me as I love guns with history, associated to them or their owners! Pretty cool!

This is from R. Labowskie. The factory letter confirms that this rifle was invoiced as a "Model 1878 Long Range Rifle" in .45 2 4/10 with two peep sight bases when it was invoiced to A.F. Mitchell of Saratoga Springs, New York, on March 13, 1879. It also confirms Mitchell purchased 100 cartridges, 200 .45/530 bullets, and a capping tool.
I found some more on Albert Mitchell today. He was later transferred to Co. F which usually means that there aren't enough members of your Co. left due to casualities. He was discharged for injuries from a hospital in Providence, RI on Dec. 10th, 1862.

It certainly is a dream come true. Congratulations on having had such a terrific event such as this, and thank you very much for sharing the good news with us. Super rifle, great story, and a fine gentleman all brought together. Bravo.
(I'd have sent along an 'attaboy' but somebody here says they are childish.)

OLR I was thinking a classic like 219 Donaldson Wasp with a 26-inch barrel.

With a Winslow style stock and white line spacer recoil pad. That 219 recoil can be brutal.

Wow Bob that is fantastic.  An original Borchardt long range rifle would be right at the very top of my list of originals I'd like to own.

Congrats!  A very fine looking Borchard that I'm sure would be a bucket list item for us all.  The background on the rifle certainly puts it over the top!

The town is Saratoga Springs  in Saratoga County Ny. While a noted seasonal area for the affluent from NYC Alfred appears to have been a "townie" from court records he is listed as a village trustee. He is buried in Greenridge Cemetery w/ wife Cordelia. He was getting a pension of $4.00 for an abdominal injury.
From an uk Sargent at Bulls Run:
"Albert Mitchell had his cap knocked off by a piece of rail struck by a cannon ball from a fence near by. The same ball threw a rail which struck my shoulder bruising it slightly. Our boys are some tired, foot-sore and lame, but in time will get over it"

Damn those were some tough soldiers, and I might add a tradition that has been followed to a "T" by all the guys fighting in wars after.

Congratulations!

I had eyeballed that rifle in the auction but didn't bid.  I think you got a great deal.  Now I wish I had put in a bid.

The provenance really tops it off.
