I've only made one mold in my life and it came out fair enough for a hunting bullet. To keep the two halves together while machining I used super glue. They came apart with some heat from a torch.

Frank, My only experience is my three jaw chuck which is not very accurate.
Your technique sure sounds like it would work well, very well.
May have to come by a self centering vice.
