44 1/2 frame width help

Print Post
Iím hoping some of you can help me and measure your 44 1/2.† I have an original in my shop that has varying widths on the frame.† Not sure if it was manufactured this way or if in finish polishing it ended up this way or if maybe refinished and took lots to clean it up.† This one measures 1.108 at the front, 1.123 at the rear of the breach block and 1.080 at the back of the frame, these number actually vary from top to bottom somewhat so these are kind of averages.† Seems to me it would be lots easier to have straight tapered sides!† Iím in the process of building one and am getting close to grinding the final width so would appreciate anyone that can help me with original frame measurement.† Anything else you can enlighten me about this frame would also be appreciated!
Thanks, Bob

This is a 7/8 - 16 threaded barrel.

Can't help with measurements right now, but the several that I've worked on to refinish were not flat to start. Draw filing them definitely takes some meat off in some areas to get them flat.

Hey, thanks guys!  This is great, I thought Iíd be lucky to get a couple measurements.  Moshannon, do you know if your sn1339 gun has been draw filed?  The measurement are somewhat similar to the gun I have.  Wondering if they start out in the 1.125 range at the front when first shaped, then during finish polishing or restoration they are loosing the width.  My original intent was to finish mine at the 1.125 width and am now thinking all your measurements are confirming this will be ok.  Thanks

How will you finish it at 1.125" when all your measurements are smaller than that now? I'd think you'd have to start with your minimum width and take down all the high spots?

In his first post - re-read the last part again.
Easy enough to miss stuff. I do it too.... plenty.

Sorry guys, I wasnít very clear.  The original gun measures 1.108.  Apparently also have not been clear as to what I am doing. I Am building a complete action, the frame is from solid 8620.  Everything is done and the action, for the most part anyway, is working.  But, and thatís a big but, there is still lots of finish work to do!  The gun Iím building Is currently at 1.155 width and to be be finished to 1.125.

To my knowledge, both frames are as they left the factory.

The CPA website says originals are 1 1/8" and their reproductions are 1 1/4" wide for the purpose of using an oversized barrel shank. It's just another reference source you could check if needed.
