44 1/2 Hammer
May 10th, 2019 at 4:03am
Print Post
Hello (from down in New Zealand)

A friend and I have a 44 1/2 each, they are very very rare down here so we are a pretty exclusive club.

One of the rifles just came in from Australia and unfortunately has a heavily altered hammer - the half cock  notch is almost entirely filed away.

Has anyone got a spare hammer they would sell - we do have a stateside address if you prefer not to ship internationally.

Cheers
Foster

Nope.  The geometry is different for the CPA hammer.

I know.

I tried.

I have seen the low profile CPA hammers being used for breech seating on original rifles. Smoke what was the issue with yours not working CPA all though currently out of stock states they will interchange?

The question is whether or not a hammer for a CPA rifle will work in an original Stevens.

The Stevens repro parts that CPA makes work perfectly.† I've used lots of them.

But most of the CPA parts for CPA rifles will not work in an original Stevens, particularly hammers and breech blocks.

I remember Gail telling me that all 44 1/2 CPA hammers are low profile to be able to use a plugged case which is all they sell for breach loading
BTW - all their plugged cases now are lathe drawn from brass rods- caliber specific

Gail swapped out an original 44 1/2 RF block for me last month with a CPA CF block that works perfectly.  Only mod she made because they use a larger pin in the action for the block - so she drilled it out larger while I waited

Oh.  That's good to know.  Did you have to use the CPA firing pin?
