The Henry double rifle, commissioned by Queen Victoria as a Christmas present for John Brown, has been bought by the National Museum of Scotland and will be displayed in public for the first time this summer, from 26th June until November.

I have a letter from Henry to Brown dated 1876, where he suggests Brown should bring his rifle with him to Edinburgh, for it to be serviced.

Queen Victoria was on a royal visit to unveil the Prince Albert Memorial in Charlotte Square, Edinburgh.

Does the letter say anything that mentions the provenance of the rifle?

Dear Sir
I hope I may have the pleasure of seeing you to have a few minutes chat next week when you come to Edinburgh.
It has occured to me that you may require a few cartridges for your rifle, and if so I can have them prepared, and should you find it convenient to bring your rifle with you, I will be glad to overhaul it and oil the locks etc. There are great preparations making here for her majesty’s visit and I expect the city will look very gay. I also hear that there are three gentlemen to be knighted after the inauguration, the Lord Provost and the two members. I hope you and all my friends are quite well and with best regards remain
Yours very truly
Alex Henry

Does anyone know where the rifle has been the last 100 years or so?

It was sold at Rock Island in 2016, then Bonham's, then James Julia's … but I don't know if it was the last one, at which NMS bought it for Scotland.

Before that ? No idea but a great story.

(Edit : from the Rock Island Auction info...
"At the time of Brown’s death, Queen Victoria ordered Brown’s possessions to be sealed in rooms, serving as time capsules that saved the memory of her beloved confidante, but when the Queen died in 1901, her son King Edward VII ordered the removal of Brown from memory through destruction of personal papers and mementos that connected his mother to Brown. Not all was destroyed. This rifle happened to be among the personal items returned to the Brown family. The rifle was later purchased by Bedford. "

Don't know if they mean Lord Bedford

Maybe it's just me, but I can't access the tour photos.
