Pedersoli Sharps 45/70. 32" Barrel Malcolm scope.

I intend to mount a Hi Lux Long Series replica Malcolm  X 6 scope on my Pedersoli Sharps 45/70   32" barrel.

As often seems to be the case opinions vary as to whether to allow the scope to float' i.e. move  when the gun recoils,  to be return to battery, either by means of a spring or by hand;

OR

to fit a clamp which locks the scope solid to the rifle.

Obviously a sliding mount will impart less of a shock load to the scope but given the build of these scopes is it really necessary.

Does anyone on this forum fit this type of scope and what is the perceived 'best method, any views would be welcome.

Regards

Steamjohn

Let it float, if you lock it down solid it will rip the bases off.

John, External adjust scopes need a little slack for adjustment.
Either springs or return to battery is to allow for adjustment. Locked down would just bend the scope.

Many thanks gentlemen. I am in the process of making a rear mount with a re enforced base attached to the rifle with three screws and a dovetail. There will be elevation adjustment but windage will be sorted with the foresight and fixed. I shall embody a nylon sleeve in the rear fitting which will allow longitudinal 'float' embodying a groove to accommodate a rib fixed (I hope ) with 'locktite' to the scope. (Eyesight is making a scope almost a necessity).
Best regards

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

The Hi Lux mounts have a history of shearing off the rear mount under higher recoiling rifles anyway. Their rear mount doesn't allow for the scope to float in it unless modified to do so.
Hopefully whatever you build will be a better design than Leatherwood did.

Yea! let it float. These things really hurt when mounted solid and you or some one you know crawls up on the Scope because they do not understand how much recoil is coming their way. Have seen it a few times and their was a combination of Hurt, Pi$$ed off, and bleeding, and I suspect some lost friendship's. FITZ. OLD TUCK Embarrassed

Years ago I had a Pedersoli 1874 in .45-70 with one of those scopes but with their first generation of mounts.  They did not slide.  After not too many shots, the soft metal of the mount pulled itself right out of the front dovetail making the scope useless.
