What range of compression for Goex ffg

Patiently awaiting a box of 210 gr Lyman 403168 bullets for my 40 twist 40/65 HiWall and was going to try some blackpowder loads for hunting.  I am going to use a duplex load and am going to start off with 9 grains of Re 7 and top with Goex ffg.  I am going to use a 0.030 poly wad.  What range of compression should I try?  It has been 20 years since I loaded a blackpowder cartridge and don't remember how much compression I settled on for the 45/70 I was shooting then.  Huh Thanks.  Tom

Tom, 10% of the BP weight in smokeless is normally considered top end. You may not have to compress any to get the Goex to burn cleanly. Best to experiment a little.

No more than 10% of the total blackpowder charge should be smokeless, ie if the bp charge would be 65 grains, then 6.5 grains of the smokeless powder, and fill the case to the base of the bullet with the black, zero compression.

I agree with these gents,10% is max on smokless  load and with RX7 it will handle just minimal  compression and shoot just fine. So if you need 60 grains, drop 6 gr.RX 7 and 54 grains of black.

With the bullet base just touching the powder column and a 'tad' of compression.

the Black Powder Cartridge News -2009 Fall - "Some Black Powder Compression Data" article by Bob Woodfill:
Caliber - 45-70
Lyman 457124
Constant volume of FFg powder used
Compression tested: 0" - 1/8" - 1/4" - 3/8" and 1/2"
Best 3 Shot Groups 100yds ... 5 shot groups were tested also, with the same compression values except for Goex (1/4") and Schuetzen (1/2")
Goex - 0.62" with 1/8" compression
Goex Express - 0.26" with 1/4" compression
Schuetzen - 0.61" with 1/4" compression
Swiss - 0.56" with 1/2" compression
KIK - 0.65" with 0" compression

Regards
John
