40-70 SS Load
Aug 19th, 2019 at 8:32pm
Print Post
Recently acquired a rifle chambered in 40-70 SS, it came with two moulds  a Paul Jones and a Lyman both sub 400 gr. projectiles.  I plan on breech seating, with smokeless powder.  I am not able to locate much in the way of load data.  Currently using 15 grs of Unique with mild success but would like to explore other possibilities.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was using 22 grains of H-108 in mine and very close to what you are using if not the same. H-108 has since become impossible to find but the Alliant 300MP load has been the same for myself. Just be very careful and just sneak up on it while also being fully aware of any pressure signs on the way.

I'm using about 18 1/2 grains of 4227 with a Darr 375 gr mold Breech seated.

Lyman Cast Bullets 4th Edition has 2 pages of smokeless load data for 300gr -420gr bullets . Even load data for IMR-4759. To me it's a must have manual.
