3031 for cal 38-55

I have a few pounds of IMR 3031 which I would like to use, the published load data for 3031 is skimpy. Has anyone had any luck with3031 in cal. 38-55 with either 150 gr or 300 gr bullets?
Thanks!

I tried 3031 in my marlin with 250 gr. lead bullets, found lots of unburned powder in barrel. Also recovered some fired slugs and the bases looked like gravel had blasted the base. For me accuracy was mediocre at 100 yds. I had no type of filler or wads to protect the base though.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

My trials with 3031 decades ago got the same results as KW. I wouldn't use it again in any of my old BP cases. Use it in modern bottleneck high pressure case.

What rifle are you using? Are you looking for hunting loads or target loads? Plain base or gas checked?

3031 is a good powder for full house loads (34,000 psi) but there is a point where in reducing the load that it becomes inconsistant in burning and you have unburned grains left in the barrel. It really doesn't do well for the light plain base scheutzen types of loads.

3031 was my go to hunting load in 45-70 with gas check Lyman  hollow pointed in a lathe. The gas check may have been a help as I never used 3031 with plain base. If memory serves, without looking, I loaded close to 40 grains in a Hepburn and pure lead as cast. It was a stout load. I switched to 38-55 for hunting deer and antelope size game and tried just about evey suitable powder available at the time.  I settled on 4895 as I got very good accuracy and good hunting velocity. I did try 3031, but did not get the accuracy I wanted, but no other problems as again was using a gas check, hollow pointed Lyman 375296. I don't recall the unburned problem, but was pushing for as high velocity as I dared in a highwall at the time. This was some 40 years ago and only kept notes on what worked back then. Memory doesn't hold up as well as it used to!! Since you have a good supply I certainly would give 3031 a try in your rifle, in particular with a gas check cast bullet. Nothing gained or lost if you don't at least test it. Please check loads for your rifle, as mine may not be safe in you rifle.

Thanks everyone!

I have used 3031 in a 45-70 for a hunting load but my hunting days are over. Now I am interested in seeing if I can use it in my High Wall in 38-55 for Schuetzen competition,so accuracy is the goal. Does not sound promising so perhaps I should just sell it and move on.

I've used 3031 in both the 45-70 and 38-55.   Not much luck at all, especially in cold weather.   My load for the 38-55 is now with 4198, that is in my Stevens 44 1/2 as well as a couple of Winchester 1894s.
