What do the "X" marks mean bracketing the company name?

I have never seen those stamps called anything but a decorative touch.

My 3 other Stevens rifles don't have them so I wasn't sure what they meant.

Even with the lugged hammer, the .38-55 chambering in the Model 44 was dropped rather quickly.  I'd guess your other 3 examples were made considerably later.

Agree, the “x” stamps seem to be on earlier rifles.

I read somewhere, it was put on the rolling stamp to give it a good start.  If there is any truth to that, I do not know.

Its been brought up before. The answer seems to be that no one knows for sure why it's there.

I think they're there as a lead-in to start the rollstamp turning. In theory it would make for a better impression of the text characters.

On Model 44s they come and go over time without any rhyme or reason that I can fathom.
