You are very fortunate, Chashooter, and not just because the mismatched barrel indexed.  Your hammer's action has the lugged hammer which shows that it was originally barreled as at least a .32-40.  That's not to say, however, that you can "hot-rod" your rifle.  But it does make it somewhat safer with full black powder loads and even moderate smokeless ones.  You should be able to have a lot of fun with that rifle.

Amen.   And all original Stevens parts, too, however mismatched.  Please remember me in your will?

I consider myself very lucky because I bought it at an auction without even a picture and just decided to  Take a chance because the seller seem to have a reasonable description. When I emailed  he had some good information about the previous owner and sent me pictures.

I am embarrassed to say how little I paid for it

I am not surprised at all that the mismatched barrel indexed just fine, I have had good luck with mismatched barrels indexing perfectly on Stevens rifles. Getting it to head space correctly is more of a crapshoot however, especially with 44 1/2’s. Swapping out breech blocks will sometimes help.

Savage made Stevens 44 barrels, absolutely will not index correctly on earlier Stevens A&T receivers, and vice versa.

I  just went out to the range and shot a few rounds again with that load of 20 grains of 4198 and the tapered 265g Welsh bullet. I played around getting the sights zeroed and fired 30 shots . let me tell you even with that light load that gun does not weigh  much and recoil was noticeable. I cannot imagine wanting to load anything hotter.

Pictures of my 32-40. You can just barely see the top of the brass case when loaded.

Thanks for posting that .a lot of people would have not been convinced that our rifles were not original.
