breech seater for original 44 1/2

I'd like to see a picture of a workable breech seater for an original Stevens 44 1/2. I'm not sure how to get around that hammer in a decent fashion. Can anyone help?

I'm sure that someone will mention to get a Speed Hammer from CPA (unless maybe you have Double Set Triggers?). Then ask Gail.

Now I don't shoot competitively but I have an original 44 1/2 that has been rebarreled to a 25-35 and I have shot it a few times breech seated.  I use two plugged cases, one to get it started and one to seat it to where I want it.  I got this idea on the forum here when somebody mentioned Paul Shuttleworth was shooting next to him using two plugged cases.  I figured if it was good enough for Paul it was damn sure good enough for me!  Tom

My double set trigger CPA came with the original Steven's type hammer. I put the low profile speed lock hammer on it for breech seating. It is my understanding they will also fit on an original Stevens without having to do any modifications. I would call Gail.
If so take a picture of which way the fly is supposed to be installed as it can be put in the wrong way.

I am pretty sure a CPA hammer will not work in an original. I do not remember the reason why for certain, memory says that the CPA hammer will not contact enough of the firing pin for reliable strikes on a centerfire.

Russ Weber shaved the bottom portion of his seater to clear the low profile hammer available for the CPA Rifle - but I do not think the low profile hammer is available for the original Stevens  44 1/2.

I breech seat my 32-40 CPA with an adjustable plugged case. Very easy with a tapered bullet, just like chambering a round. A straight bullet might take 2 plugged cases; one with a slip fit neck with the plug down in the neck to get it started and one normal one to get it seated in the rifling. Closing the block gives about 1/4 inch of seating.

I asked Gail about installing the low hammer in my 44 1/2. She dissuaded me.

John the CPA Web site does state that it will not fit. But they also have the original hammer for a 441/2 that one could then easily bend the spur himself to be able to accommodate a mechanical seater such as the Weber or other. The original hammer could then be put aside and then re-installed at a later date. They also have the Fly.

CPA hammer on top and left. Note the striking surface difference between the CPA and original 44 1/2 hammer.

Bottom photo is a CPA hammer in original 44 1/2. Note the lack of contact with the firing pin.

About 10 years ago I had Russ Weber make me a seater for my 44 1/2.  For my first attempt at making it work, I had my gunsmith, the late Doug Knoell, bend the hammer spur down so the seater would clear.  The spur broke off in the middle of the Iron Sight Offhand match at Raton in 2016.

Back to the drawing board, I had Dougie make me a new hammer with a lower spur and nose that would clear the seater (which also means I can clean the gun from the rear).

Then I got a 044 1/2 that I didn't want to change the hammer, and Doug and I put our heads together and designed the seater pictured here.  It works without modifying the hammer.

I don't know if there is a difference between the 44 1/2 and 044 1/2 in terms of centerline of the bore in relation to the top of the hammer and spur.

I'm not quite sure what your seater is cramming against.  Would you mind posting another picture of how it works in your rifle?
